When the coronavirus pandemic blanketed the world, it force F1 to delay it new technical regulations. With all sporting activity on ice, the sports’ finances also take a huge hit. In F1’s case, the Renault F1 team insist that the pandemic has not affected its future plans. However, they also have to address the rumours swirling around Daniel Ricciardo.

Although the team backed the 2021 technical revolution its promise of a renaissance, the 1-year delay doesn’t change a thing. Renault F1 and team boss Cyril Abiteboul insist that they are committed to battling with the top 3 F1 teams.

“It is not a one-year postponement that will make us review our position, even if the scope of the crisis, which we do not yet know, could force us to do so,” he told Auto Hebdo.

Renault also have to take care of the Daniel Ricciardo question

As mentioned earlier, Renault is not the only one to commit to F1. Star driver Daniel Ricciardo has been the subject of a number of rumours lately. Many link the Australian to potential drives in top F1 teams, particularly Ferrari. Ricciardo’s contract expires at the end of the season, with most of the F1 paddock on the same boat.

“It’s complicated for both Daniel and us,” Abiteboul admits. “We wanted to see the spirit, the performance, how the team functioned during this second year together, what progress we had made on the car, to see how it felt.”

“We discussed a calendar to identify the key stages we wanted to talk about. It was all in a normal universe that has since been shattered. Afterwards, we’re already talking to each other on this aspect, because he wants to see where he’s going.”

Abiteboul confirmed that Daniel Ricciardo is on the cards, but there are a few other fish in the sea. What complicates the situation is the massive break from racing. Especially since it makes it harder to make the right decisions.
