Rumors linking Fernando Alonso with a return to F1 with Renault continue to persist. Alonso left Formula One racing after two poor seasons at McLaren. Although it wasn’t his fault that the McLaren cars were so poor in performance. However, the Spaniard continued to be active in racing. In 2019, he participated and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and also participated in the Indianapolis 500, but failed to qualify for the main race. Now the talk doing the rounds is that Alonso could return to F1, with the team he won 2 world championships with. However, Renault’s former F1 engineer, Isaac Prada thinks Alonso’s signing isn’t just going to help Renault on the track.

La Voz de Asturias interviewed the former Renault engineer. When asked if Alonso’s signing brings about off track benefits for the French team, Prada said, “In addition to wanting to compete and win races, marketing is one of the strongest reasons why Renault is in F1. Fernando is, without a doubt, the pilot who will generate the most publicity for them in every way. It’s a 10 in that regard!

“Both Renault F1 and Fernando know that now they would be the perfect marriage in Formula one. It will be what the Asturian(Alonso) decides. If the French team had to write a letter to the ‘Three Kings”, Alonso would be the gift they would ask for.” He adds.

In their hay day, Alonso won two back to back world titles with them in 2005 and 2006. So this combination has worked to great effect before. However, Renault is not the team they were back then.

If this ‘marriage’ indeed were to happen now, one wonders how successful Alonso and Renault would actually be on the track. Renault struggled with reliability issues last year and their team principal, Cyril Abiteboul also took a shot at their technical team, hoping to get a better car in the future. So this may not end up being the happiest of marriages.
