Carlos Sainz had an embarrassing crash at the start of the race in Sochi. Lando Norris who witnessed the crash unfold in front of him reacted to it on the team radio. He questions Sainz if he was “trying to be a hero.”

Carlos Sainz got off to a decent start but he could not go beyond Turn 2. Running into the turn in question, he was already on the outside and got onto the kerbs. He had to go around the bollards, as was the rule mentioned by the Stewards before the race.

In doing so, he clipped the wall and damaged his front left suspension and had to retire. Lando Norris was not entirely impressed with what his teammate did. “What’s Carlos doing?” asked Norris on the team radio. “Trying to be a hero in Turn 1.”

As Sainz’s car hit the wall and got back onto the track, Norris was right in front of him. The incident took Norris by surprise, as he had to slow down to avoid colliding with his teammate.

The stewards called in the Safety Car as there was also another car of Lance Stroll stranded on the track. Norris pitted early in the race and opted for a massive stint on the Hard tires. But in the end, McLaren called him in for a set of Mediums as his tires were almost dead.

He eventually finished his race in a disappointing P15. McLaren ended the weekend with 0 points. The team is now under threat from Racing Point, who are just two points off after Sergio Perez brought home 12 points.

Sainz sorry for the team but confident ahead of Germany

During the post-race interview, Carlos Sainz took the blame for the early shunt during the race at the Russian Grand Prix. “First of all, apologies to the entire team. It was tricky to get a good start on the dirty side.

“And by turn 2, we were surrounded by other cars. I went too deep and left the track, so I decided to run over the sausage kerb and go around the bollards to avoid a penalty,” said the Spaniard.
