Antonio Giovinazzi targeting Ferrari seat beyond 2021
Giovinazzi first appeared on the F1 scene back in 2017. The Italian stepped in as a temporary replacement for Pascal Wehrlein at Sauber. Giovanzzi’s performances weren’t exactly mind-blowing but a decent effort for a first timer in F1.

Giovinazzi made his full-time F1 debut last season, partnering Kimi Raikkonen at Alfa Romeo. The Italian struggled in the first few races but found his footing in the latter half of the season. Antonio finished an impressive ninth at Monza in his home Grand Prix. However, the Italian’s best result came at the Brazilian Grand Prix, when he finished fifth.

Driving for Ferrari is a privilege that many can only dream of. However, driving for the Scuderia as an Italian is an experience that only a few in history have accomplished. Giancarlo Fisichella remains the last Italian to drive for the prancing horse team.
Ferrari is yet to announce a driver for its second seat beyond 2021. This means Giovinazzi could be a potential candidate to replace Sebastian Vettel after this season.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italy, Giovinazzi said:
“I am aware that this will be an important year for me and I do not hide that I have set my sights on Vettel’s seat.”
“It’s been my dream since my passion started, and it’s nice to be among the candidates fighting for that seat. Now it’s up to me to make the most of this season, get results and then create that opportunity myself. “

The Italian’s ambitions are commendable but Ferrari has many potential candidates for 2021. With only 4 drivers having contracts after this season, the Scuderia is spoilt for choice. Having drivers like Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas available, Antonio’s dream may be put on hold for the near future.
With the team not having tasted a World Championship for over a decade, Ferrari needs to think about its driver lineup long and hard.
