Fernando Alonso is right at Formula 1’s doorstep, moments away from making the jump back in. With the regulation changes making their way into the sport by 2022, he feels that a driver needs to be at the right place at the right time to win a championship.

Alonso also believes that Sebastian Vettel’s four championship titles were a “Stroke of luck“.

Speaking to as.com, Alonso expresses what is needed to be a World Champion. “Well,  I think you’ve been in the right place at the right time. And although everyone now thinks that it was known, it’s a bit of stroke of luck,” says the Spaniard.

Alonso opens up his views on Red Bull winning four world championship titles. “When Red Bull achieved four titles in a row, I think it was difficult for everyone to think that an energy drink was going to dominate F1 four years in a row against giants like Ferrari, Mclaren, Mercedes,” says Alonso.

So that was a stroke of luck and Vettel has four titles worldwide.”

Sebastian Vettel will join the Aston Martin for the 2021 season. With the regulation changes taking place from 2022, there is huge uncertainty over which team will use the changes to its fullest advantage and do what Mercedes did back in 2014.

Alonso believes Lewis Hamilton’s championship campaign was also aided by lady luck as he jumped ship to Mercedes a year before the rule changes took place.

You also need that stroke of luck to be at the right time, and when Hamilton went to Mercedes. The movement was questioned a lot because of that year was quite bad, they were third in constructors. But then came the turbo and this new era of F1. And they won every other year,” says Alonso.

So no one knows. If you go to Mercedes today, it is certain that you are going to win. But when Hamilton changed, which was a year before the rule change, they were not emerging at all.”

Lewis Hamilton is chasing his seventh World Championship title this season. He will equal Michael Schumacher in the number of titles if he ends up winning it this year. A feat that certainly needs a lot more than just good fortune.
