Seidl Explains What McLaren “Have to Focus on” in Battle With Racing Point and Renault

McLaren is currently placed at P4 on the constructors’ championship with 134 points. They are tied with Racing Point at P5. Renault is standing at P3 with just one more clear at 135 points.
This season, Ferrari has had significant problems with their power unit. As a result, the third position in the constructors’ championship blew wide open. The three teams are fighting for P3 standing with just one point separating them.
McLaren team principal, Andreas Seidl, was reported discussing what needs to be done to secure the P3 position. He stated that the team must focus on maximizing its qualifying positions in the remaining races.

He stated, “as always key is qualifying position on Saturday afternoon because it makes such a big difference how your race goes if you have a free air or if you’re stuck behind another car and that’s what we have to focus on.”

McLaren looking forward to ending 2020 at P3
Talking about the race at Imola, Seidl expressed that the qualifying result compromised their race result. He pointed out that with a P9 and P10 start, there wasn’t much they could do at Imola.

Carlos Sainz overtook his teammate to finish at P7. “We have seen with Carlos that on a track like this, if you’re stuck behind a car then even if I think we had maybe slightly more pace, we simply couldn’t do anything,” added Seidl.

Seidl further acknowledged that McLaren’s race weekend was error-free. He also expressed that he was happy that the team managed 10 points with a P9-P10 start.
He mentioned, “The team and both drivers, in terms of race execution, did a great job. We had good pit stops and the right calls on the strategy side and obviously we benefited from the incidents, which kept us in the fight for the third.”

Seidl explained that the team will be focusing on whatever marginal gains possible to close the gap with Renault. The battle for P3 is very much alive. However, it remains to be seen whether McLaren will take our Renault for P3 or Racing Point will sneak up and surprise both of them.
