Recently, former Red Bull driver Mark Webber spoke to the At The Controls podcast on many topics. Among them, he opened up on the Sebastian Vettel situation at Scuderia Ferrari and what prompted his impending departure. Once Scuderia Ferrari backed Charles Leclerc for the long term, the death knell tolled for poor old Sebastian Vettel.

According to Webber, there is a certain point in a two-car team, where everything begins to gravitate towards one driver. In this case, it was almost clear that Charles Leclerc was the favoured one at the Maranello outfit. Meanwhile, all that Vettel could do was try and do his best with what he has. In the last few years, all his efforts for Scuderia Ferrari have gone in vain.

The Australian mused, “So, I think his confidence has pretty much been rattled with the lack of penetration with the Italian culture. That marriage really wore him out, he doesn’t look his age right now. He’s had a good hard run, but I think he’s just worn down.”

What lies in the future for Sebastian Vettel, Webber guesses

The former Red Bull and Jaguar driver believes this is ex teammate could potentially take a sabbatical for this season. However, one thing is for certain, he cannot fathom the idea of Sebastian Vettel heading to a midfield team. He is still young, but he would not be surprised if Vettel hangs up his boots for good.

Bear in mind that Vettel is now a married man and has three children to take care of. The COVID-19 pandemic could also be a major deciding factor in terms of the 4-time world champion re-evaluating his career. Webber continued, “Most of his career he’s been sniffing around podiums, apart from the first year at Toro Rosso, which he still won a race in that first year.”
