The rumor mill has been running amok with whispers claiming that a memorable day awaits for 21-year-old Mick Schumacher, who could be making his first F1 appearance soon.

Set to feature at the Tuscan Grand Prix in Mugello, it would indeed be a great achievement for Ferrari’s academy driver ahead of taking his first steps to race in the top motorsport class.

Ferrari’s Mattia Binotto had talked about Mick’s development in Formula 2, with the idea of integrating him at a ‘smaller F1 team’ down the line. 

According to reports from RTL, “The 22-year-old should start in free practice on Friday. But it is not yet clear for which team, only Ferrari customers Alfa Romeo and Haas are actually eligible.” (translated from Google)

Does Mick’s Focus Lie Elsewhere? 

One line of thought claims that he could be making his debut. However, there are multiple sources claiming the contrary. A different set of reports suggest that Mick will NOT be featuring anywhere near Formula One for the time being. 

Instead, his entire focus will be on the ongoing F2 Championship, where he is currently trailing Callum Ilott by 6 points in the drivers’ standings. Mick most recently clinched a Feature Race victory at Monza, proving his mettle to the world and stoking the fire that claims that he is ready to make the jump to F1 sooner than later.

Mick has been racing for Prema Powerteam Racing in what is only his second season in Formula 2. One can say that he has actually improved a great deal from last season when he finished in 12th position.

The rapid progression of the young German driver seems to suggest that an F1 seat to his name could soon be there for the taking. And that is exactly where being a part of the Ferrari Academy comes in handy.

What does the future hold for Mick Schumacher?

For instance, should Ferrari assist teams such as Haas or Alfa Romeo to go around looking for a challenger for their seat in 2021 or perhaps 2022, Mick Schumacher would certainly be a top name on that list.

Integrating him into a team with no major expectations would ease the pressure and if things go well, he could be looking upwards to the big boys. 

At present, however, all Mick would be thinking of, is how he could close the gap on Callum Ilott to clinch the F2 Championship. But, if a chance to try out an F1 car in practice sessions does materialize, he would be the first one to jump at the opportunity.
