Options are not exactly free-flowing for Sergio Perez at the moment, as he continues his hunt for an F1 seat. The 31-year-old Mexican driver has already announced his intention to leave Racing Point at the end of the season. And while Haas and Alfa Romeo are interested in him, no concrete movement has been visible so far.

In such circumstances, Perez could consider an alternative option. An option that a lot of drivers have opted for in the past, most recently Fernando Alonso.

According to Zak Brown, the McLaren IndyCar team would be interested in signing Sergio Perez. This team also takes part in the Indianapolis 500, over in North America.

Brown was quoted as saying, “He’ll probably end up in Formula 1, [that] is my guess, at either Haas or Alfa Romeo. But if he had an interest in IndyCar, I think he’s a great racecar driver.

A driver of Perez’s quality losing out on an F1 seat would be an absolute shame. From being an amateur driver to developing maturity and racing intelligence, Perez has come quite far.

Racing Point were never a top team or even a midfield certainty, yet he has won 5 podiums with that car. It goes to show that Perez is definitely too talented a driver to not be taking part in the top motorsport division.

Perez keen on sporting success as well

However, he will have to weigh the pros and cons of his decision. At 30, having earned a lot of commercial value thus far, his aim would also be clinching trophies.

And from a very logical perspective, it is hard to see how either of Haas or Alfa Romeo would meet his ambitions and objectives. In addition, competing in the IndyCar Series might keep him closer to his home in Mexico.

Perez’s potential arrival will undoubtedly boost the McLaren IndyCar campaign. Originally known as Schmidt Motorsports, the team currently function under the name of ‘Arrow McLaren SP’.

They have won 7 races and 20 podium finishes in their 20-year-long history. If Brown can make the deal happen, we could be looking at a new showstopper for the IndyCar series.
