Evidently, Fernando Alonso is still clinging to the vague hope that he will still race in Formula One. So, the Spaniard claimed that he held discussions with several F1 teams to come back in 2020.

Unfortunately for Alonso, all the 2020 seats were quickly filled up and left no space for him. So, the 2-time F1 world champions is training his focus on the 2021 season and a chance to nab a seat.

Although he left the pinnacle of motorsport at the end of the 2018 season, Alonso insists that this isn’t the last we see of him in F1. Speaking to the Italian media about a potential return to Formula One, Alonso revealed that he talked to several teams in 2019.

Interestingly, the former McLaren driver felt that 2020 was not the right time for a ‘triumphant return’. So he chose to bide his time and eye a seat for the game-changing 2021 F1 season.

“In 2019 I was very busy. For this year I didn’t want to commit myself after Indy, but I was thinking about 2021: thinking about whether I want to go back to F1 for a few more years or compete in the full Indycar championship or race in WEC in the Hypercar category.“ Alonso told Gazzetta Dello Sport.

He confessed that he missed working with the engineers and optimising the car around the races. However, he countered his own argument by saying that he did not like the constant travelling and consecutive race weekends.

He also could not resist taking a cheeky jab at Mercedes and their stranglehold on the F1 world championship.
