Fernando Verdasco Disappointed on Not Being a Part of the Spanish Davis Cup Team

Fernando Verdasco has been left out of the Spanish Davis Cup team as the world number 40 felt ‘very disappointed’ for not being the part of the team.

Verdasco showed his displeasure with Spain’s Davis Cup captain Sergi Bruguera after the two-time French Open champion refused to name Fernando Verdasco in the team to contest at the revamped Davis Cup finals in Madrid in November.

In an emotional message on Instagram, Verdasco explained how disappointed he is that Sergi Bruguera did not feel that he could count on him and did not consult him before making the decision.

The Spaniard wrote in an Instagram post, “Very sad and disappointed to not be in the Davis cup team and to not have been consulted by the captain. I was looking forward to playing what could be my last Davis cup in my home city. Thanks to everyone who still believes in me and who stuck with me in 08, 09, 12.”

The 35-year-old further added: “There are only 2 more tournaments this year then it’s time to rest, recharge my batteries and train harder than ever for next year.”

Sergi Bruguera has named Rafael Nadal, Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreno Busta, Feliciano Lopez and Marcel Granollers for Spain’s Davis Cup team. Verdasco is currently ranked No.40 in the ATP Tour and is 19 places higher than his compatriot Feliciano Lopez, who has been named in the Davis Cup team.

The revamped Davis Cup has been launched and funded by a consortium which includes F.C. Barcelona star footballer Gerard Pique and the finals of the new-look event start on 18th November 2019 at the Caja Magica in Madrid and Spain has been drawn alongside Russia and Croatia in Group B.

Each tie will consist of two singles and one doubles match, with the winners of the six groups and two top-ranked runners-up progressing to the quarter-finals of the one-week event.
