Ferrari F1 is looking to add a woman driver to its academy. All current members of the driver academy are men. Team boss Mattia Binotto is keen to change that. The boss wants to add a talented female driver soon. He believes it’s a matter of time in addressing the lack of gender diversity.

Lack of Women in F1

F1 has and still continues to remain a male-dominated sport. Despite Tatiana Calderon competing full time in the 2019 Formula 2 season,  she did not accumulate adequate super license points to drive any current F1 machine. She last tested Sauber F1‘s (now Alfa Romeo) 2013 race car in 2019.

Susie Wolff still remains the last woman to participate in an F1 Grand Prix weekend. She last drove in 2015, during the Free Practice session of the 2015 British Grand Prix. Giovanna Amati still remains the last woman to have competed in F1, having tried to qualify for three races in the 1992 season.

This lack of gender diversity has been discussed ever more frequently in the last couple of seasons. Recently, Lewis Hamilton has expressed a desire to see a talented female driver perform well with the best talent in Formula One.

Ferrari F1 and Its plans to tackle diversity across the organization

Ferrari F1 seems to be taking an active role in being a more diverse and inclusive team. The message coming from Binotto is adamant. Women have to be a part of the driver academy of the Italian team. It’s now up to the team to find the right driver to fill the role.

He has indicated that a woman will be part of their driver academy in the near future. Currently, all 7 non-E-sport drivers are male, including Mick Schumacher.

With the new W-Series being launched by the FIA, there is now a platform for talented female drivers to showcase their talent. Perhaps in the future, there will be no barriers in F1, letting the best drivers compete in the sport, regardless of gender.
