Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is one of the most recent additions to the list of people who have contracted the Coronavirus.

Arteta came out with a statement regarding the same and seemed thoroughly disappointed about the fact that the pandemic was able to get its claws to him. He said,

“This is really disappointing but I took the test after feeling poorly. I will be at work as soon as I’m allowed.”

Following the incident, people most recently in contact with Arteta have undertaken a self-imposed quarantine as per Government guidelines. Reports suggest that the entire Gunners team will also undergo the self-quarantine.

The club statement says, Arsenal personnel who had recent close contact with Mikel will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines. We expect this to be a significant number of people from Colney, including the full first-team squad and coaching staff.”

Arsenal managing director Vinai Venkatesham said: “The health of our people and the wider public is our priority and that is where our focus is. Our thoughts are with Mikel who is disappointed but in good spirits. We are in active dialogue with all the relevant people to manage this situation appropriately, and we look forward to getting back to training and playing as soon as medical advice allows.”

It is clear that the Gunners will not be participating in the upcoming matches with the players and coaches unavailable. In fact, the team was to travel to Brighton this Sunday itself, but with the full first team under quarantine, that seems impossible now.

Mikel Arteta tests positive, Premier League considering future fixtures

As soon as Areta tested positive for the COVID-19, Premier League called for an emergency club meeting on Friday to “discuss future fixtures”.

Other clubs, too, are suffering the wrath of the pandemic. Benjamin Mendy of Manchester City and three Leicester City players have also placed themselves in quarantine.

Thus, the future of the PL stands uncertain. Serie-A has already suspended its operations indefinitely. With events like NBA and Indian Wells also kneeling in front of the illness, there is little left that PL can do to continue.

It just won’t bode well for them to carry on under such adverse conditions. For starters, practicing is out of the question. Arsenal has already closed its entire Colney Training Centre so as to prevent the spread of the disease.

Secondly, training with half the people under quarantine will be a waste of time and effort. Last but not the least, it better to be safe than sorry.

The Coronavirus is as real as it gets. The situation is deteriorating by the minute and there are no signs of any progress.
