In a spot of stunning news, Manchester City copped a ban from the Champions League for the next two seasons. Apparently, the football governing body (UEFA) discovered that City committed “serious breaches” of the Financial Fair Play regulations.

As a result, the Manchest City football team not only earns a €30 million fine, but were barred from the 2020/21 and 2021/22 UEFA championships.

A statement from UEFA explained the sanctions against the Preier League giants. It said, “The Adjudicatory Chamber found that Manchester City Football Club committed serious breaches of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations by overstating its sponsorship revenue in its accounts and in the break-even information submitted to UEFA between 2012 and 2016.”

Furthermore, Club did not cooperate in the investigation of this case by the Club Financial Control Body. Hence, the club faced drastic action on the matter.

Immediately, City issued their own statement, responding to the decision. Surprisingly, it stated that the club was “disappointed but not surprised”.

Evidently, Manchester City FC also acknowledged that it was in big trouble over the matter. Earlier this week, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) revealed that City and UEFA were locked in a dispute over the investigation.

In order to mitigate the damage, City attempted to appeal to CAS before a punishment was levied. Sadly, they were denied, and now, the club has to face the consequences.

All that City can do now is try and win the Champions League this year. It would also serve as a massive blow to UEFA’s rules, since the tournament winning team gains automatic qualification for next season.

Unfortunately, even if they do win, they will still get a 2-year ban from the competition. So, Pep Guardiola and the Cityzens will be aiming to go out on a high note.
