Former World Champion Alain Prost Defends Misfiring Sebastian Vettel

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel has been living a nightmare ever since the 2018 season. That year, he committed a series of errors and the championship slipped from his grasp. Even in 2019, the German driver has been hit and miss on several occasions even at the halfway stage.

Naturally, this on added fuel to the fire added by the Ferrari driver’s critics, as they questioned his motivation. Many have even suggested that Sebastian Vettel may hang up his boots and walk away from Formula One.

However, there have been experts who have leaped to the 32-year old’s defence. Among the people backing Vettel, is former Ferrari driver and former champion, Alain Prost.

He said, “If you look at the big drivers, the big champions, they all made mistakes. We’re all just people. I’m sure Seb will come back. But it’s still a pity, because I don’t want to see him like this. He deserves better.”

“Sometimes you have a phase where it just doesn’t work. I don’t want to put any more pressure on Sebastian. Everyone has to help him, inside the team and outside. Because it’s very hard.”

Last week in Monza, Sebastian Vettel experienced a case of deja vu as he spun on Lap 6. It was almost a carbon copy of the spin he had last year on the opening lap of the race. Unfortunately, this time, he did not emerge unscathed, which was mostly down to his own impatience.

He tried to rejoin the track as quickly as possible, but forgot the cardinal rule about watching for oncoming traffic. As a result, the Racing Point of Lance Stroll was sent into an unexpected spin.

When the young Canadian rejoined, he very nearly sent a startled Pierre Gasly into a spin as well. Luckily, the Frenchman took to the gravel to avoid the out-of-control cars.
