Francesca Schiavone Reveals Her Uphill Battle Against Cancer

The 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone opened up on her fight against the disease of cancer. The 39-year-old Italian was absent from social media for almost eight months and on Thursday she announced, “Hi everyone. After 7, 8 months of absence from social media, from the world basically, I’m here to tell you what happened. To be continued…”

On Friday Francesca Schiavone vividly explained the pain and agony which she underwent over the past few months.

I’ll tell you what happened in the past seven months of my life: cancer had been diagnosed to me. I did chemotherapy, I fought a tough battle and now I am still breathing. I have won this fight. And now I am back in action,” Schiavone said.

Former World Number four Schiavone was delighted that her recovery gave her another chance to live her life. She is one hundred percent fit and looking forward to taking up new projects.

I’m ready with my heart and my mind to start new projects I had planned, but I never got round to. So we’ll see each other really soon. I’m really happy of who I am today,” Francesca Schiavone added.

The Italian tennis player Schiavone hung her racquets in 2018. In 2010, at the Paris major she became the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam event in singles. The following year she once again reached the finals at French Open. Also, she was a finalist at Roland Garros 2008 in the doubles domain.

At Australian Open 2011, Francesca Schiavone played the longest ever women’s singles match at a Grand Slam tournament. She defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 6–4, 1–6, 16–14 in the fourth round.

Interestingly she is the last one-handed-backhand player to win a Grand Slam title on the women’s circuit.
