In 2013, after a thrilling competition at the Muirfield Golf Links, the former World No. 2 stood up to lift one of the most prestigious trophies in golf, ‘The Claret Jug’. Giving up the Jug back to Peter Dawson, he opened up about the way he celebrated the win. With Mickelson in the picture, it goes without saying, an ‘extravagant’ way of celebrating the win.

Phil Mickelson is known for his larger-than-life lifestyle. Having a net worth of close to $400 million, the American golfer has made sure to spend his earnings in the most luxurious ways. This time was no different. Days before the 2014 Open Championship, the 45-time PGA Tour title winner indulged in a conversation with a media house. During the conversation, he revealed that he drank a $400 million wine from the Jug to celebrate the win.

“I’ve loved having the Jug with me for the last 12 months,” he started.

Going ahead in the conversation, he opened up about the importance of the Claret Jug in a golfer’s life while pointing out the tradition attached to it.

“The people who know and love the game get a big kick out of it. They really appreciate what it means to hold such a famous trophy. And drink out of it. I only let them drink the good stuff of course. There’s been nothing in there that is sub-par,” he further added.

Heading towards the end, he walked down the memory lane, recalling his biggest celebration. Drinking the 1990 bottle of Romanee Conti wine. “But the best was a 1990 bottle of Romanee Conti wine. It wasn’t on my dime thankfully. It costs about $40,000,” he asserted.
