For the past two decades, Phil Mickelson has inspired many young golfers to turn pro and follow in his footsteps. However, in recent years, he has also acted as a role model for many in terms of losing weight. How did Lefty manage to make such a massive change in his body compared to his prime playing days? Let’s take a look at Mickelson’s dedication to his fitness and his biggest sacrifice during the process.

Though Phil may not be the fittest golfer in the world, that doesn’t undermine the fact he isn’t healthy. At the age of 52, the Hall of Famer is in the best shape of his life. After years of ignored healthy habits, Phil Mickelson finally decided to go follow a disciplined eating lifestyle.

After a disappointing 2014 season, Mickelson made the decision to change to a healthier lifestyle in order to shed 20 pounds and accelerate his club head speed by 10 mph. From thereon began a journey of a much fitter Lefty. Ahead of the 2020 US Open, Phil shared details behind his newfound dedication toward a healthier lifestyle to Golf.com.

“I wasn’t educated”, Mickelson said while addressing his past unhealthy habits. Nonetheless, he then talked about his new healthy patterns which include 1.5 days of fasting to detox his body so it can recover, while also having a healthy diet for 5.5 days.

The six-time Major winner then talked about his biggest sacrifice during the whole process. “Food”, said Phil Mickelson. He added, “I’ve got to eat a lot less and I’ve got to eat better. I just can’t eat as much and I have to let my body kind of recover”.

Though the process of weight loss may have not been easy, Lefty still considers it a blessing. He said, “It’s also been a blessing for me because I feel better and I don’t have inflammation and I wake up feeling good”. In the end, Mickelson reiterated his satisfaction with himself by saying, “It’s been a sacrifice worth making”.

Undoubtedly, the golfer has undergone several changes in his life which have helped him in recent years. He became the oldest Major winner after claiming the 2021 PGA Championship at the age of 50. If it wasn’t for his new healthier lifestyle, perhaps he wouldn’t have been able to add the sixth Major to his resume.
