Phil Mickelson is among the prominent names teeing it up this week at the 2022 U.S. Open Championship. He played good golf in the first and second rounds, with a few crisp iron shots at the demanding Country Club in Brookline. The World Golf Hall of Fame member started the third major championship event of the year on a rather disappointing note. He carded an opening round of eight-over-par (78) which meant he had a mammoth task ahead of him in round two, on Friday. The six-time major championship winner could not go low on a challenging day.

In the opening round, ‘Lefty’ carded three bogeys, one double-bogey, and five pars on the opening nine holes and moved out in five-over-par (40). The golf veteran made two bogeys, one birdie, and one double-bogey on the back nine to wrap up his first round.

Mickelson carded a second round of three-over-par. His round of 73 included two birdies, two bogeys, and five pars on the opening nine holes. As a result, the 52-year-old professional moved out in level-par (35). He made three bogeys on the back nine to make the turn at three over par (38).

Although his second-round score was considerably better than his first round, it was not enough. After 36-holes, Mickelson, who stood at an overall score of 11-over-par for the tournament, missed the cut (three-over-par) by a whopping eight shots.

Apart from Mickelson, his fellow LIV Golf Invitational professionals also missed the cut. The prominent names include Kevin Na, Sergio Garcia, and Louis Oosthuizen. While the South African professional missed the cut by three shots, Na and Garcia ended the event with a score of five-over-par and four-over-par, respectively.

Who is leading after round two at the Country Club?

Collin Morikawa and Joel Dahmen are the co-leaders of the third major championship event of the year. Both professionals are at an overall score of five-under-par. As a result, they head into the moving day, Saturday, with a narrow one-shot lead over the rest of the field.

On Friday, Morikawa carded a round of four-under-par (66); Dahmen registered a round of two-under-par (68) to finish on the top of the leaderboard after the second round. Can either professional win the event? Or will someone from the trailing pack take the lead and win the major?
