How Many Golfers Have Requested for a Release to Compete in the LIV Golf Invitational Series So Far?

The PGA Tour is facing a tough time as the LIV Golf Invitational Series is approaching its inaugural event. Currently, many PGA Tour pros have requested a release to compete in the Greg Norman-led league. However, there are only a few golfers who have publicly accepted that they have applied for release.

According to the reports, Jason Kokrak, Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood, Richard Bland, and Robert Garrigus have applied for a release to compete in the inaugural event of the LIV Golf Invitational. As of now, only these golfers have made their intentions and actions public. However, they have not fully committed to the rival league yet.

When will the Greg Norman-led LIV Golf Invitational Series begin?

The Saudi-backed and Greg Norman-led LIV Golf Invitational Series is all set to begin on June 9th, 2022. The Centurion Club London will be the host of the event, which is just a week before the 2022 U.S. Open. This will not be a traditional 72-hole event like the ones we are used to seeing. Instead, this will be a 54-hole three-round event with no cut.

This is a world series, and hence, there will be different venues in different countries for each event. The former Australian Tour pro, Greg Norman, believes that the primary purpose of this world series is to grow the game.

Moreover, the prize money purse for the first seven events is $25 million. And the eighth and final event will be a team competition with $50 million as the total prize purse. Hence, this is a great lucrative offer for all golfers, due to which, we are witnessing the reports of many tour pros wanting to join the event.

Recently, a senior Golf Broadcaster revealed that around 80 PGA Tour pros have asked for a release to play the inaugural event of the LIV Golf Invitational Series. Among all the golfers who have publically announced the same, only Lee Westwood has been the most vocal. However, the other golfers have not fully revealed their playing status.

Hence, it will be interesting to see how the PGA Tour responds to this saga. And whether players competing in this event will face any consequences or not.
