According to Steve Williams’ famous book Out of the Rough, Woods was already very much in trouble from the beginning of the 2005 PGA Championship. The golfer shot an opening round of 75, but things got even worse as he reached the 18th hole.
Williams, as quoted on page 151 of his book, explained how Woods shot a ‘low hook’ and his golf ball “smashed into a tree and landed in a gully near a water hazard”. That’s what it looked like from a distance. However, when the two got closer to the ball’s assumed landing position, Williams “found it buried in soft ground.”

However, Woods who earlier doubted the ball might have gone underwater was now claiming that it was stepped upon. He even asked people if they saw what happened and if they could recall looking at the ball landing. Later, he asked the rules officials to let him lift the ball. But once they denied it, the golf star was left with no choice but to take a penalty drop.
The game didn’t go very well. However, the next day, things got even worse for Williams than for Woods. “I was dumbfounded to see a local paper report that it was I who’d stepped on the ball,” Williams mentioned in his book. “The writer said he’d reviewed the video footage and that I was the only person who’d been near the spot where the ball was eventually found.”

Williams was shocked to read what was being written about him. However, he clarified that he was not the one to blame. “If I’d stepped on the ball, Tiger would have been penalized one shot and I would have admitted it. I’m not a cheat,” he said. But that’s how things were, according to him, around Woods. Anyone who’s around him is bound to be in the news for unforeseen reasons.
