While the United States Golf Association (USGA) and Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (R&A) may have thought of modernizing the sport of golf with its latest proposal, the golf world isn’t happy with the new proposition. Earlier, legendary golf equipment manufacturer, Titleist, released a statement denouncing the governing bodies. Now, one of the brand’s most notable endorsed athletes, Justin Thomas, has also shared his dismay.

This past week, the USGA and R&A, hosts of the US Open and Open Championship, have announced a reduction in the size of the golf ball to provide golfers with lesser yardage. The massive announcement was criticized by the golf world, with Acushnet Holding Company leading the list of denouncers.

Titleist, a subsidiary of Acushnet Holdings, has been a sponsor for two-time PGA Championship winner, Justin Thomas, since his amateur days. He displayed his loyalty to the brand earlier today ahead of the upcoming PGA Tour event.

Justin Thomas voices his anger at the USGA and R&A

After a disappointing performance at the Players Championship, Thomas looks to find his top-notch form at the Valspar Championship in Florida. However, after the practice sessions at the Copperhead Course, JT answered some of the questions at the press conference.

Though the 29-year-old had sported the Titleist cap many times in the past, many indicated that it was his style of showing his support for the legendary manufacturer. However, Justin then voiced his anger with USGA’s latest proposal by saying, “My reaction was disappointed and also not surprised, to be honest”.

He then disclosed how the American governing body has been selfish for many years. “I think the USGA over the years has — in my eyes, it’s harsh, but made some pretty selfish decisions”, added Justin Thomas. While the golf world is divided over the new proposal, the two-time Major winner has made his intentions clear.

JT further said, “You’re trying to create a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist” – a similar phrase used in yesterday’s press release by Titleist. According to the sporting brand, the new policy will lead to bifurcation among professionals and recreational players. Moreover, since it’s only planned for certain designated events, golfers will struggle to adapt to changes from one event to another.
