This weekend sees the commencement of the new PGA Tour season with the Fortinet Championship, but that isn’t the only tournament in town. The much-talked-about LIV Golf Series returns for its fifth installment in Chicago at the Rich Harvest Farms golf club in Illinois.

Players who will make a splash at the Chicago LIV event

After a tight finish at the Boston LIV event, LIV Golf re-emerges after a fortnight. The Chicago event will not witness any new names barring a few, with the field featuring 46 of the 48 players who participated in Boston a couple of weeks earlier.

After driving an eagle in the first playoff hole to secure his victory, Dustin Johnson is on fire since joining the LIV series. His exploits have also helped his team, 4 Aces, win the last three LIV tournaments.

Elsewhere, newcomers Joaquin Niemann and Anirban Lahiri, who were runners-up in their debut event, will look to gain experience in the LIV series. World No.35, Talor Gooch, has also returned to LIV, after participating in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. The 30-year-old came a respectable fourth at the tournament and is in superb form, having never fallen outside the top 10 in any LIV event.

While there aren’t any recent significant additions on the Tour, LIV have recruited one of the top talents in the golf circles – 20-year-old David Puig. The Spaniard was a top-10 player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and has replaced Adrian Otaegui in the competition. LIV Bedminster winner, Henrik Stenson, also returns after suffering from a bout of vertigo that forced him to withdraw in Boston.

Total Purse and winner’s share for the 2022 Chicago LIV event

Like all LIV events so far, the Chicago event follows a $25 million purse, of which $5 million is shared among the top three teams. Every member of the 48-player field will receive a prize incentive, while players finishing in the top 24 will be guaranteed points ranging from 1 to 40 depending upon the position achieved.

The winner of the individual event will rake in an eye-watering $4 million. With only three events left before the current LIV season draws to a close, it is imperative to check on the players’ standings so far. Boston winner, Dustin Johnson, leads the way with 94 points, followed by South African Branden Grace on 77 points. The third spot is tied between Carlos Ortiz and Talor Gooch.

The top 3 at the end of the season will be rewarded with a $30 million additional prize pool, of which $18 million will go to the top-ranked player. The runner-up will receive $8 million with the remaining $4 million for the second runner-up. To be eligible, players need to have participated in a minimum of four LIV events across the season.
