VIDEO: When Bryson DeChambeau Confronted Patrick Cantlay for Violating a Golf Course Etiquette

Bryson DeChambeau is one of the most promising players in the golf world. He is also one of the most controversial entities in the sport. The golf world always points out his errors whenever he goes against tournament rules, like slow play. Nevertheless, did you know that the 1-time major winner had once called out his colleague for breaking a golf etiquette?

“Patrick, can you stop walking?” DeChambeau asked fellow contender Patrick Cantlay. The incident happened during the playoff at the 2021 BMW Championship.

In the video, the viewers can see the 2020 U. S. Open champion getting ready to take his approach shot. However, he stops in the middle of it to ask Cantlay to stop walking. Notably, the commentators of the tournament misheard him and thought he asked his fellow competitor to stop watching. 

Patrick Cantlay explained DeChambeau’s action! 

It is one of the many rules of etiquette in golf not to distract other golfers in any way. Even if they are taking a practice swing, the others shouldn’t talk, walk, or drive a golf cart; basically anything that can affect the player’s concentration. However, since it is not a written rule but a part of the etiquette, many blamed DeChambeau for his actions.

“He just wanted me to stop walking,” Cantlay said following the incident. According to him, the Tour officials asked the golfers to speed up. And he thought to start walking to the next spot during DeChambeau’s game as he is a slow walker. “No big deal,” Cantlay said nonchalantly about DeChambeau’s action. “That stuff kind of happens every once in a while out here.” 

Did Bryson DeChambeau win the 2021 BMW Championship?

DeChambeau and Cantlay played well in all four rounds of the 2021 BMW Championship. While the Mad Scientist made 27 birdies and 4 eagles throughout the competition, his opponent made 31 birdies. Notably, DeChambeau shot impressive 68-60-67-66, whereas Cantlay’s 66-63-66-66 in all rounds to force his opponent to battle in a 6-hole playoff for the title. 

Cantlay dominated the entire playoff, although the long driver impressed the spectators on the extra fifth hole with his great tee shot. Following his valiant efforts, Patrick Cantlay won the 2021 BMW Championship title. It was his fifth PGA Tour title win.
