Phil Mickelson, 52, Has Blunt Reaction to Missing the Cut at 2022 U.S. Open

Phil Mickelson is one of the most talked-about golfers today. The six-time major winner “Lefty” is currently playing in the U.S. Open. Mickelson recently got back from a long break from golf and joined the LIV Golf Invitational Series.

The golfer started practicing for the event earlier than most players. But the U.S. Open rounds are not going very well for Mickelson. The player had a bad day on the course on Thursday. But Friday wasn’t better either at the Country Club.

Phil Mickelson exits early from the U.S. Open

Mickelson hit two birdies at three-over 73, but as he was on his way to 78 it was too late to make a difference in the visible result of his week at the U.S. Open. In an interaction with Golfweek in the player’s parking lot, Mickelson told them, “I thought I was more prepared than I was,”. While leaving the course on Friday, he said in disappointment, “The U.S. Open is the ultimate test. And you don’t really know where your game is until you get tested, and I thought I was a little bit closer than I was.”

What is affecting Mickelson’s game on the course?

A big reason behind Mickelson’s bad play at the U.S. Open seems to be the early media interactions he had during the beginning of the event. All those controversial questions and passive-aggressive comments that the golfer received have surely affected his performance on the course. Along with that, we cannot ignore that Mickelson had just celebrated his 52nd birthday on Thursday, making him older than most golfers on the field today.

However, Mickelson is still in belief that he can do much better than he is doing now, and wishes to return stronger and better the next time. He said, “I feel I’m certainly playing better than I’m scoring, and I look forward to working on it.” Mickelson will be missing the cut this season at the U.S. Open.

Nevertheless, Phil Mickelson has managed to reportedly make over $200 million just by signing up with the LIV Tour. He is going to remain the brand ambassador of the Saudi-backed tour even if his glory days in the sport are over. Although, his performance at the U.S. Open has made his career in non-LIV events doubtful.
