A move to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf was considered viable for him, considering his beef up with the PGA Tour. Mickelson was one of the earliest entrants in the rebel league, and certainly, its first big-money signing. Lefty joined LIV in the month of June earlier this year for a reported fee worth $200 million, the highest package offered to any golfer on the Tour.

At the press conference held alongside the event, Mickelson mentioned why LIV Golf was “here to stay”. “The PGA Tour for the last 20 or 30 years have had all the best players in the world. That will never be the case again. LIV Golf is here to stay,” he said.

Mickelson also wished for a speedy resolution to the issue. “The best solution is for us [is] to come together,” he said. He also mentioned how a youth-centric, attractive brand of golf in LIV was helping out in changing the perception of an old, historical game.

“I think that the world of professional golf has a need for the old, historical history of the game product that the PGA Tour provides, and I think that LIV provides a really cool, updated feel that is attracting a lot younger crowd,” he said.

The Chicago event in Illinois was LIV Golf’s fifth event of their inaugural season. The increased viewership was further reason to believe in LIV Golf’s upward surge at a time when it battles out with the PGA and the DP Tour, who have their separate events running simultaneously.
