It has been over six months since Phil Mickelson left the PGA Tour and joined the newly found LIV Golf. During this period, a lot has changed in his life. Many of his fans started unfollowing him for signing with the Saudi-backed golf league, which in turn, helped him earn millions and become the highest-paid athlete of 2022. Most importantly, his ranking on the OWGR standings decreased way rapidly.
According to multiple media outlets, the 50-year-old ranked 71 before teeing up at the first-ever LIV Series event held at Centurion Club in London. However, after months of participating in events that don’t give out Official World Golf Rankings points, he fell 63 places to rank 134. Notably, it was the first time Mickelson ranked out of 100 since 1993.

The LIV Invitational Series doesn’t give out OWGR points for playing in its events. And since the league players have been banned from the PGA Tour events, which does provide the same, the likes of Phil Mickelson were not able to earn world ranking points since the moment they teed at a 54-hole tournament.
After falling from the Top 100, it took Mickelson to rank out of the top 200 mark as well. According to his OWGR profile, the golfer now ranks at 209, and it is the first time in 30+ years since he ranked this low.

🚨NEWSFLASH
Not sure what's more noteworthy, the fact that Phil Mickelson has fallen out of the top 200 in the world for the first time in more than 30 years, or the fact that I haven't even noticed it for almost two weeks… #OWGR 🤷♂️

Notably, Lefty has never ranked no. 1 on the OWGR standings. He has always been the no. 2. However, falling out of 200 while being an active golfer wouldn’t be a phase one would have thought the 6-time major champion would ever go through.
Will LIV Golf Invitational Series get approval from OWGR in 2023?

LIV CEO Greg Norman and his entire management team have worked hard to get accreditation from the OWGR. Since they know the PGA and other major Tours, who consider them rivals, would do everything in their ability to not let them get the OWGR approval, LIV Golf merged with MENA Tour. The LIV officials figured their move will help them get OWGR approval.
But their hard work went in vain. According to a Golf Digest article, the process of OWGR inclusion can be up to one-two year to complete. The OWGR law also states that a prospective tour must adhere to the OWGR guidelines for at least one year immediately prior to inclusion. This means that the LIV Series won’t get OWGR accreditation at least until 2024.

Although many say that the rankings don’t matter, everyone knows it is not true. And not being able to earn OWGR points would make Mickelson fall out of the Top 500 or 1000 in no time.
