Many consider Tiger Woods to be the greatest golfer of all time, with 15 major championships under his belt. The legend has accomplished a lot when it comes to golf. He is the only person to ever win four major championships consecutively.

Woods made his professional debut in September 1999. Less than a year later, he had already made it to the top of the OWGR Rankings. It is no surprise that he has dominated the topmost ranks for the majority of his career. But shockingly, Wood’s rating has just dropped past his previous all-time low of 1199. As per the OWGR, Tiger Woods’ rank is 1232nd.

Tiger Woods and his history with the OWGR

The OWGR is an abbreviation for the Official World Golf Ranking. They are an entity that studies, evaluates, and rates golfers around the world to rank them. The company originated in 2003, and its objective is to manage a transparent, reliable, and accurate ranking for golfers. The ranking is determined by the relative performance of the players competing in male-eligible golf tours all around the world. It is published and updated weekly.

The G.O.A.T. once sat atop the OWGR ranking at number 1 for nearly 5.5 years straight (281 weeks). Competing with the likes of Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els in their prime, this was no ordinary feat. On May 17th, 2014, Tiger ranked number 1 for the last time. He has since made his way to the top 10 but never placed first.

He holds the record for being number 1 for the longest, having spent 906 weeks on top. The second behind him is Ernie Els, who’s 118 weeks behind him. It is unlikely anyone will ever beat his record, especially if Tiger manages to get back up there again. But right now, that seems like a farfetched dream. Tiger’s rating is at an all-time low and he doesn’t even rank in the top 1000 at the moment.

Why is Woods’ ranking so low at the moment?

In late February 2021, Tiger Woods was in a car accident and sustained multiple fractures. He shattered his ankle and broke both his legs. He had to undergo surgery for some of his fractures. Since the accident, Woods has been on and off the course multiple times, but he hasn’t yet fully recovered.

His game has suffered because of this, and so has his ranking. Late in May this year, Woods shot his highest-ever score in the PGA Championship with a score of 12 over par at the Southern Hills Country Club.

Woods has been in a similar situation before. In November 2017, he ranked 1199th. A year and a half later, in April 2019, he made his way back to the top 10 rankings. Fans hope Tiger will do that again.
