Former South African captain Graeme Smith has officially been appointed as the head coach of T20 Global League team Benoni Zalmi. The last time Smith stepped on the field was in 2014 for Somerset, incidentally in a T20 game. Geoffrey Toyana has also been appointed as Smith’s assistant. “I am personally passionate about creating young leaders and I believe there is no one better than Graeme Smith. He is a model of leadership and inspiration for the talent that will form Benoni Zalmi,” These were the words that franchise owner Javed Afridi used to describe Smith.

The South African will have the chance to use all his experience to inspire the team and guide them through every hurdle. Smith admitted that he was excited and ‘looking forward to this association’. Smith is not the only former cricketer to take on a coaching role in this league though, Stephen Fleming has been appointed as the head coach for the Stellenbosch Monarchs with Eric Simons as the second-in-charge. The Global T20 League is expected to start in the month of November and it will be contested by eight privately owned teams.
