Grigor Dimitrov and Matteo Berrettini Stunned in the Second Round of Australian Open 2020

The Day 3 of the Australian Open 2020 has already witnessed a couple of upsets in the men’s section during the day session. In one of the biggest upsets of the day, Tennys Sandgren stunned the World No.8 Matteo Berrettini in a thrilling five-setter. Also, Former World No.3 and 2017 semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov suffered a shock defeat against unseeded Tommy Paul in the second round.

World No.80 Tommy Paul outlasted Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-7(3-7), 7-6(10-3) in 4 hours and 20 minutes. With this victory, Paul extends his best performance at a Grand Slam tournament, reaching the third round.

Playing the main draw of the Australian Open for the first time in his career, Paul resisted 21 aces and 68 winners from Dimitrov. However, the 22-year-old also forced his World No.18 to commit 60 unforced errors in the course of five sets to win the match.

Sandgren Ousts eighth seed Berrettini in a marathon five sets

An error-strewn Matteo Berrettini was outlasted by Tennys Sandgren in a nerve-wracking five-setter 7-6(9-7), 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 7-5 in 3 hours and 27 minutes on Wednesday.

The man voted as Most Improved Player of the Year in the 2019 ATP Awards secured his first victory in Melbourne in the first round. However, with this defeat, he becomes the first Top 10 player in the ATP rankings to get knocked out of the Australian Open 2020.

 

Berrettini looked solid at the start of the match, facing no breakpoints in the opening set. However, the American changed gears in the first set tiebreaker as he saved a set point and grabbed the first set.

The 28-year-old broke once to get a 2 set lead over the Italian. However, Berrettini responded well and levelled back the match, winning the next two sets and taking the match to the decider. In the final set, Sandgren broke Berrettini at 5-5 before serving out the set 7-5 and record the fourth Top 10 win of his career.

Marin Cilic downs Paire in a thrilling five-setter

The 2018 Runner-up Marin Cilic dispatched the 21 seed Benoit Paire 6-2, 6-7(6-8), 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(10-3) taking 3 hours and 37 minutes to get the job done. With this victory, Cilic reached the third round of the Australian Open for the third consecutive year.

The Croatian withstand 30 aces from the French in the course of five sets to get the better of his opponent. While Paire hit a total of 63 winners,   Cilic managed to hit 59 winners. However, Paire also committed 51 unforced errors against 38 from Cilic. The Frenchman also hit 10 double faults and lagged behind on his second serves, winning only 37 percent of second serve points.
