During the Singapore GP press conference, Haas F1 boss Guenther Steiner was questioned about his decision to retain Romain Grosjean. His frank answer was, “We just woke up one morning and decided to do it.”, to everyone’s laughter.

He revealed that he talked to Hulkenberg, but decided to place their chips on Romain Grosjean. So, in other words, poor old Nico Hulkenberg is finding a number of doors slammed in his face.

However, when Steiner was asked about Grosjean’s strengths and weaknesses, which influenced the decision, he got cheeky.

He said, “Weakness as well? Where should I start! No. Romain’s been with us a long time and we looked at ourselves and in the moment the drivers are not our issue, it’s the car. So in the end we decided to focus on the car and keep the other things stable and therefore we re-signed Romain for another year. We know his weaknesses – a lot of people know that he has very big highs and very big lows as well. So, hopefully it’s time to change. I’m waiting for that and maybe next year is a good year.”

When pressed further into the matter, especially on the subject of consistency, he said that always tries to talk. However, if somebody could teach him, he is always available, to everyone’s laughter.

Afterwards, they were talking about Nyck de Vries, who had just signed for Mercedes‘ Formula E team. When Alfa Romeo boss Frederic Vasseur was talking, Steiner’s phone rang, and apparently it was Grosjean. That was when Steiner joked, “He’s calling after my comments”.

Both Steiner and Vasseur had a good laugh in the press conference and seem to get along handsomely. It got to a point where Steiner couldn’t even speak as he was giggling so much, Vasseur was in no better shape.
