“He Wasn’t Ours”: Dayana Yastremska’s Father Opens Up on Split with Coach Sascha Bajin

The Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremska has cut-ties with her coach Sascha Bajin since September. As a result of her unsuccessful run in 2020, the World No. 29 decided to part ways with the German.
Her appearance in the finals of the Adelaide International remains her season’s best achievement. In the Premier-level Adelaide tournament, she lost to hometown-girl and World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty in two straight sets 6-2, 7-5.
Famously known as the hitting partner of Serena Williams, Bajin has coached Naomi Osaka and Kristina Mladenovic before the Ukrainian. However, the Dayana-Bajin duo didn’t work out on the court as the 20-year-old dropped eight ranks compared to last season. Her father Alexander opens up on the reason behind their split.

After her considerable start to the season, the Ukrainian failed to make a mark in 2020. Her loss against Sascha’s former pupil Naomi Osaka at Cincinnati Masters added a dent in their already failing collaboration.

“Sascha Bajin is a good coach, very helpful, but it turned out he wasn’t ours. I don’t look at this partnership as a mistake for Dayana, it was another experience for her, but I don’t see any advantages either. Everyone look at how good you play and what result you get,” said Alexander. “It’s not easy to work with Dayana, she has a tough personality. Relationships on and off the court are very important for her.”
Alexander added, “At some point it was clear for her no good would come from this partnership anymore. She’s bossy, she demands appropriate attention. For example, with Bajin’s congratulations to Osaka, it was funny story but with a sad ending (laughs).”

Awarded 2018 Coach of the Year after Osaka’s two Grand Slam titles, Sascha will now coach former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova. Currently residing at Number 4, the Czech tennis player has not left the Top 10 since 2016. Her prowess in service along with her strong forehand might work well with the abilities of Bajin.
Meanwhile, Dayana is ready to enter the 2021 Australian Open with a new team in place. According to her father, only time will tell what this new team will bring to Dayana’s table.
