The Kerpen facility is famous for being the home to the Schumacher family. It is the place where Michael and his brother Ralf built their passion for racing. From Ayrton Senna to Mika Häkkinen or Sebastian Vettel, the track saw many great champions sharpen their skills on the track. It was known for many years that the facility would one day be used for the Hambach lignite mine.
At the beginning of 2018, it became clear that the Erftlandring, the Schumacher go-kart circuit will be demolished for a lignite mine. The time for the handover of the site to RWE Power was October 2020. Now, due to the protests near the famous Erftlandring, RWE has changed its plans. The surprising turnaround was made possible by the coal agreement between the federal government, the states and energy companies, which also retained the preservation of the Hambach Forest.

Reiner Ferling, chairman of Michael Schumacher’s fan club in Kerpen, told the same newspaper that he hopes to be able to organize a big party on the go-kart track next summer. “I hope that we can give a party at this go-kart track this summer, along with many drivers who have grown up here. Think of Sebastian Vettel, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Ralf Schumacher, Mick, and Gina Maria Schumacher. That would really be a highlight to be.”. The Schumacher family still owns two-thirds of the track.

Michael Schumacher’s go-kart track in Kerpen, Germany, has been saved. Protests from the local environmental movement ensured that energy company RWE would not be allowed to extract lignite at that location. The legacy will remain unchanged at the Michael Schumacher kart and event center.
