Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is set to miss Euro 2016, which starts on 10 June 2016 in France, after sustaining a serious knee injury whilst training with the Borussia Dortmund team.

The club stated on Friday that the 25-year-old midfielder has dislocated his kneecap during training and the results of the medical tests have confirmed that he will not return to the game until next season.

The injury comes as a huge blow for Joachim Low’s side, as the Dortmund midfielder has given a lot of eye-catching performances this season despite other niggling injuries, and would have been a vital cog in the world champions’ European endeavour.

Gundogan, who missed Germany’s successful World Cup campaign in 2014 due to a persistent back problem, is unfortunate to miss yet another major tournament for Die Mannschaft. He will also be unavailable for Dortmund’s final two Bundesliga matches as well as the important DFB-Pokal final against arch-rivals Bayern Munich on May 21.

The former Nurnberg man has been heavily linked with a transfer to Manchester City at the end of this season as Pep Guardiola, who is understood to be a keen admirer of the player, will attempt to rebuild the City squad after a poor domestic season. But this knee injury has thrown Gundogan’s proposed move to the Etihad in serious doubt.
