“I Feel Like a Winner No Matter What”- Yair Rodriguez Comments on the No Contest Against Jeremy Stephens

The main event of UFC Mexico between Yair Rodriguez and Jeremy Stephens unfortunately ended in no contest since Stephens was not able to continue after he suffered a terrible eye poke in the first round.

Though Herb Dean gave Stephens full five minutes to recover from the eye poke, Stephens could not open his left eyes even if he wanted to. it was a terrible ending to the main event. Before the fight we saw Rodriguez hugging his family and friends before stepping into the cage and the whole arena was their to support Rodriguez. However, the anti climax made the fans went crazy who started throwing bottles and cans into the octagon. We also saw Rodriguez lost his calm for a while who even shouted at the official at the heat of the moment.

Well, Rodriguez doesn’t doubt the heart or courage of Jeremy Stephens and he gives the benefits of the doubt to Stephens. Rodriguez said:

“I am just sad. I am gonna give the benefits of the doubt to jeremy Stephens. He is the only one who knows how it feels. I have never been poked in a fight in the eye.”

Rodriguez also said that he would have wanted to continue the fight if he was in the shoes of Stephens. “It was not my intention to poke his eyes” said Rodriguez.He claimed:

” In the Frankie Edgar fight my eye was completely closed and I could not see nothing. But I was willing to keep on going. But not everybody is the same. I don’t know how he was feeling. Let’s see what happens. This is just sad.”

Yair Rodriguez got very emotional after the fight stopped. Justifying that Rodriguez explained:

“I just want to show people that I was there for them, I was ready to fight that I feel like a winner no matter what.”

In his post fight interview, Yair Rodriguez has said that he is open to fight Jeremy Stephens in future. However, it was an unfortunate ending to a main event which had the potential to be one of the best fights in recent time.
