“I Felt I Could Give My All” – Kei Nishikori Reveals Playing for Japan Helped Him Defeat Rafael Nadal

The year 2016 was a very special year for Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori. That was the year he made his entire country proud by winning a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics. He beat Rafael Nadal in the bronze medal match and he has just talked about how he won it. Check out what he said.

Kei Nishikori had made it to the bronze medal match where he faced Rafael Nadal. He had started off well by winning the first set but sadly, he lost the second. It looked like the match would go Rafa’s way until Kei pulled off an amazing comeback and won the third. In a recent interview with the Tokyo Olympics, he talked about how he did this and said,

“I had a fervent wish to deliver at least some kind of good news to Japan, which served as added motivation to win and helped me bring out my best – particularly during difficult phases, I was able to keep my cool throughout and, of course, didn’t give up until the end. I felt I could give my all to this match to make the people supporting me happy, even if there had only been one or two of them, I was empowered by my supporters and have learned a lot from this experience.”

Kei Nishikori certainly made his country proud by winning a bronze medal back in 2016. But he will want to make them even prouder by winning a Gold Medal and there is no better place for him to win it than at the Tokyo Olympics in front of his own country.

Sadly, he couldn’t do it this year due to the coronavirus pandemic postponing the Olympics to 2021. He was definitely not happy about it but he is going to focused on training well. And hopefully, he will win the Gold Medal in 2021.
