Novak Djokovic downed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4 to clinch his third straight title of the season at the 2020 Dubai Open. It was a battle of the young and old, the veteran versus the next generation; experience versus exuberance. The Serb looks hungrier than ever this year. So what exactly motivates this man?

Djokovic could not have asked for a better start to his season. He has won all the tournaments he has played until now. He remains unbeaten this year with 18 victories and a winning streak of 21 matches.

The Serb has just grown stronger as the season has progressed. He was absolutely fantastic throughout the Dubai Open event. Yes, he was down three match points against Gael Monfils; but, that was always going to be a tough match for Novak. Other than Novak himself, Monfils is the man most in form on the Tour.

Novak Djokovic talks motivation

Tsitsipas came into the final in good form too, but the next-gen torch-bearer could hardly chink the Serb’s armor. As Novak tackled the Greek and took him out, one thing was clear- he does not lack motivation. In fact, Djokovic looks more motivated than he has ever been.

“Well, motivation never lacks, to be honest, at least in my case. I find motivation in the small things and details. As I said for me the biggest motivation is my self-growth as a player and as a person. Tennis really allows me to have that platform of learning and growing and developing both personally and professionally like nothing else in life. I’m grateful for that.”

We are just as grateful for it. His motivation to play his best season yet, combined with his hunger for glory is just clearing the path for a laser-focused man.

The World No. 1 has his goals all carved out into the back of his mind. These goals play a huge part in motivating him too.

“Then, of course, I get inspired and motivated by the goals that I set. That’s why I play professional tennis. It’s why I compete. The season, as I said, started in the most perfect way possible. I am aware of the fact that most of the matches that I’m going to play, the players will not have much to lose. They will go out and try to play their best and stop the streak. At the same time the more I win, the more confident and comfortable I feel playing next match and competing and really performing well.”

Nole will now take a quick rest as he prepares for the Indian Wells Masters. The competition will be tougher at the Masters 1000 event, but Djokovic will not be worried. All he needs to do now is concentrate on his own game.
