”I Keep Telling Myself, Why Didn’t I Dive”: MS Dhoni on His Run-out in the World Cup Semi-final

MS Dhoni has been in the news despite not playing a single game since the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand last year. Both Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja took the team near the finish line with their stable knocks. The hope of India’s win was intact until India’s best finisher was in the middle.
However, that didn’t stay long. Martin Guptill’s stunning throw ended all the hopes of India’s win – be it the semi-final or another World Cup. His throw sent Dhoni back to the dug-out with a dejected look. India required 31 runs off the last two overs while chasing a total of 240.
Captain Kane Williamson brought the extra pace of Lockie Ferguson and kept James Neesham for the final over. Although the veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batsman started the over with a maximum over the deep backward point, he failed to keep it doing further.

In the third delivery of the over, he tried to take two runs. He would’ve comfortably made it to the crease in any other day but that was certainly not his day. Martin Guptill had some other ideas as he quickly collected the ball and successfully completed the run-out to leave MS Dhoni inches short of his crease.

Dhoni himself was stunned. Even after so many days, everyone recalls the incident. India Today Consulting Editor Boria Majumdar asked Dhoni about the dismissal where he regretted not diving to reach the crease.

“I keep telling myself, why didn’t I dive. Those two inches I keep telling myself, ‘MS Dhoni, you should have dived,” Dhoni told Majumdar.

Ever since that match, he has not taken part in any game and not many know about his future plans. Even many speculations have been going on about his retirement as well. Moreover, India head coach Ravi Shastri also said that the veteran wicket-keeper batsman may retire from the ODIs soon but continue to play the T20 format.
