“I Kind of Like Not Having the Noise” – Serena Williams Opens up on Playing Fan-Less US Open 2020

23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams has started her preparation for the US Open. Tennis took a back seat in march when the Coronavirus wreck havoc all across the world. Now after five months tennis has returned and so players are playing the smaller tournaments to get some match practice.
Serena Williams is currently playing in the Top Seed Open in Lexington, US. She defeated World No.60 Bernarda Pera 4-6 6-4 6-1. She will play her sister Venus Williams in the next round.

Players are having mixed thoughts on playing without the crowd at the US Open. The organizers of the Grand Slam decided on the decision to prevent the virus from spreading and have a safer tournament. Serena after her match sat down for the press conference and talked about the no fans and artificial crowd noises.
“New York will be different because there is a massive stadium” – Serena Williams
Serena didn’t mind the silence at the Top Seed Open. It was just weird for the American. New York will be different as the US Open is played in the biggest tennis stadium in the World. And so players will need to adjust as the massive stadium will be empty and silent.
“I didn’t know how I was gonna feel. I didn’t know how I was gonna do. And the next thing I know I don’t mind it. Like I said I don’t hate it. It’s weird. I think being in New York will be a little different because there is this massive stadium so I kinda probably have to see how that is.” Serena said.

Also, many other sports like football are using artificial crowd noises. Serena is skeptical regarding its implementation. But she hasn’t experienced it so she isn’t sure.

“I have seen that. I kind of like not having the noise but at the same time, I haven’t tried artificial noise so I am not the best judge of it yet,” she said

A crowd-less US Open will look different and weird. There will be no cheering and players will find it tough to find motivation at the low points in their matches. Let’s see how Serena does without the crowd at her home Grand Slam.
