“I Went to Vomit Twice” – Stan Wawrinka Suffering From Sickness at the Australian Open 2020

Former World No.3 Stan Wawrinka admitted of underlying medical conditions as he overcame sickness to pull off a thrilling five sets victory over Andreas Seppi in the second round of the Australian Open 2020 on Thursday.

After being down a break at 3-4 in the deciding set, the 15th seed claimed back-to-back breaks to close out the match 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in 3 and hours 38 minutes. However, he had to vomit twice during the match to overpower a stern challenge from Seppi.

“I had been bedridden for two days”: Stan Wawrinka

Wawrinka revealed he felt better for the match after sleeping until early afternoon. However, The Swiss star also divulged he had to vomit twice during the game, which is why he left the court unscheduled.

“I had been bedridden for two days. I went to vomit twice during the game. So I am very happy I go through it,” Wawrinka said in a post-match interview with RTS Sport.

The 34-year-old explained that it was a tough five-setter that could have gone either way. However, he kept fighting and is super happy to get through.

“The key to surviving is to fight, keep pushing and a bit more aggressive when I could. So happy to get through five sets, always, always tough and can go either way but happy to get through,” he said in the post-match press conference.

Earlier, the 3-time Grand Slam champion also required four sets to defeat Damir Dzumhur in the first round before claiming his fifth consecutive win over Seppi. He will next face America’s John Isner in the third round in Melbourne.

Wawrinka expects a stern challenge against Isner as he said: “Tough match. We all know he is a very dangerous player, serving big. You don’t get a lot of opportunities. You need to stay strong, be aggressive, try to make him play as much as possible. That’s it. Stay positive all the match.”
