The England cricket team have found themselves in a spot of trouble ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. The host nation got an injury scare, courtesy their captain Eoin Morgan. Morgan is set to undergo a precautionary X-ray following an injury to his left finger. Alarm bells are close to going off as the incident takes place, less than a week before the World Cup begins.

According to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Morgan sustained the injury while performing catching drills. This is a big blow for them, especially ahead of their warm-up game against Australia in two days’ time.

An ECB statement read, “Eoin Morgan took a knock to his left index finger fielding this morning. He is going to hospital after practice for a precautionary X-ray,”

The 32-year old led 14 players  onto Hampshire’s ground for practice before the big game against Australia. Unfortunately, Joe Root was an absentee, owing to personal business, so he was unavailable for practice. The good news is, Root will rejoin the squad, well in time for the Australia game on Saturday.

Being the hosts, England have the honour of kicking off the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Their first opponents will be South Africa on May 30 at The Oval in London, followed by Pakistan at Trent Bridge a few days later.

Morgan was appointed England captain back in 2015 and has been a crucial figure in leading England to the top of the ODI rankings. Eoin Morgan has 222 ODI games under his belt and possesses an average of 39.64, with 12 centuries and 45 half centuries to his credit.

Morgan even led England to a 4-0 series thrashing over Pakistan to dent their hopes ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. All this was in spite of missing the fourth ODI owing to a suspension for a slow over rate.
