The Swiss star Roger Federer has been in some long matches over the years. From having a 5-hour match against arch-rival Rafael Nadal to contesting the longest Wimbledon finals against Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer has seen it all.

However, with increasing age, longer matches tend to take a greater toll on your body. Especially in grand slams, where even a straight-sets victory can make you sweat for two hours.

So, how does the Swiss maestro deal with marathon matches? Federer revealed in his post-match press conference after decimating Marton Fucsovics.

What Did Roger Federer Say?

Federer had his first real test in the Australian Open against the gritty John Millman. In a match that stretched till the tiebreaker of the fifth set, Federer merely survived a potential upset.

Even Marton Fucsovics gave him a tough time. Roger Federer revealed that traditional methods don’t really work for him when it comes to coping up with long matches-

“I’m the guy who doesn’t do ice baths. I tried it once, didn’t like it, so I’ll never do it again.”

Over the years, it has become tougher for Federer to maintain his stamina in marathon matches. He revealed how his coping mechanism has changed with increasing years –

“I’m still doing the same. I used to try to sleep enough and take massages in a stretch. That’s it really, do that for as much as I can to get ready.”

After long matches, it becomes essential that your body is just tired. That means that it is not carrying any additional pain. Roger Federer agrees with that viewpoint –

“I always wonder how other players feel after a match like this. Most important is that you’re not carrying any injury away from a match like this. You know because fatigue is one thing, you can deal with that.”

“I’m actually very happy how I’m feeling, considering my age. Considering everything that I’ve gone through throughout my career and the toughness of first real tough match of the season. After having not played these kinds of matches for some time, it’s nice to see that the work I did in the offseason paid off.”

Roger Federer is all set to face emerging tennis star Tennys Sandgren in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open 2020.
