Ravichandran Ashwin was back into the side after quite a while, and immediately showed why he belongs there. In his first over, he beat Aiden Markram with a beautifully bowled off-spinner, that bounced over the stumps. A few balls later, he bowled another ball that went drifted away before pitching, and turned sharply into Markram. The ball went through his defence and hit the top of middle stump. For Markram, he continues his dreadful run in India.

The wicket came after India had declared at 502 for 7, putting South Africa to bat. India immediately put them under pressure with the spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin starting to trouble the South African batsmen. Ashwin also dismissed Theunis de Bruyn, while Jadeja cleaned up night watchman Dane Piedt as South Africa finished the day at 39 for 3.
