Indian Wells 2019: Garbine Muguruza Dismissed By An 18-Year-Old

The WTA courts of the Indian Wells Masters witnesses another major upset after the World Number one and two tennis player, Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep packed their bags from the Californian desert. This time, it’s a Spaniard, Garbine Muguruza who is knocked out of the BNP Paribas Open by an 18-year-old Canadian, Bianca Andreescu.

Andreescu is presently dwelling on her career-high ranking of World Number 60 and she steamrolled over the two-time Grand Slam champion, Garbine Muguruza and made it to her first ever semifinal of a Masters event. She is wildcard recipient and it’s her first appearance at the Californian desert.

The Canadian needed 52 minutes to rule out the Spanish ace, Garbine Muguruza. In today’s match, the percentage of points won on the first serve for Garbine Muguruza was about half than that of Andreescu. The World Number 152, Andreescu claimed her fourth top 20 win and the second one in a row as in the previous round she defeated the 18th seed Wang Qiang.

The World Number 20, Garbine Muguruza could manage to win just a game in the quarterfinal clash. En route to the last eight round she surpassed the seventh seed, Kiki Bertens in a three-set battle and before that Garbine Muguruza received a win since Serena Williams retired during in the round-of-32 match.

The ninth-seeded German, Angelique Kerber is through to the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells 2019 as she ousted World Number nine, Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round. Now Kerber will be taking on the American, Venus Willimas in the last eight round in the battle of the Grand Slam champions. Presently, the 38-year-old, Venus is the oldest WTA player on the women’s top 100 ranking.

Besides them, Elina Svitolina will play Marketa Vondrousova who defeated Halep in the previous round and Belinda Bencic, who dethroned the reigning champion, Osaka will see the fifth seed, Karolina Pliskova.
