Insider Tom Henderson posted a Twitter thread where he uncovered the truth behind the SBMM system in Modern Warfare.

“Activision patented a new SBMM system in April 2019 (6 months before the release of Modern Warfare). The new SBMM system doesn’t just take your K/C, SPM and W/L anymore… It calculates everything including your movement around the map, the weapons you use, purchases and more.

“The patent states that a part of the system is designed for “influencing game-related purchases”, which means players that have COD points or a tendency to buy COD points could be matched with players that have purchased in-game items to entice them.”

He also clarified that this is old information. Although, it needed a revisit considering all the uproar surrounding SBMM in around the Black Ops Cold War Beta.

This just adds fuel to the ever-raging fire about SBMM and whether it is good for the game or not. Many would argue that it helps players become better, but others would suggest that it just makes life difficult for everyone. Hopefully, there will be a solution to this in the near future
