Injured Victoria Azarenka Will Play Fed Cup Semifinal in Australia

After her miserable loss at the Monterrey Open, where Victoria Azarenka retired in the championship match against the second seed Spaniard, Garbine Muguruza, she keeps her participation in her future endeavours intact.

She had an undaunted run on the Mexican courts as she knocked down the top seed, Angelique Kerber in the semifinals. Despite everything, the World Number 60 Belarusian was despaired in the final due to her calf injury. Before giving up the match, Victoria Azarenka took a medical timeout to strap her right calf. However, eventually she pulled out at 6-1 3-1.

“It’s unfortunate I couldn’t give my best today, but I tried my hardest,” Victoria Azarenka wept.”I want to say thank you to my son Leo, who is not with me here. I would love him to be here to share this with me because it is special.”

It was her first championship appearance in three years, the previous one being in the year 2016 in the United States where Victoria Azarenka triumphed in both the swings of ‘Sunshine Double’. Besides her present injury, she intends to play for her nation in the upcoming Fed Cup semifinal this month. 

The World Number ten, Aryna Sabalenka, World Number 35 Aliaksandra Sasnovich and the two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka are the salient representatives of Belarusian tennis. The Belarusian women will take on the Australians in the Fed Cup later this month in the Australian city of Brisbane.

The former U.S Open champion, Samantha Stosur will be playing the semi-final fray against Belarus and Australia is in the quest of their first Fed Cup title since 1974. “We’ve selected a really strong team and it’s going to be a great fight between Australia and Belarus,” the Aussie Fed Cup captain, Alicia Molik said. “It’s also really exciting to welcome Sam back into the team. She has a really good Fed Cup record and her most recent doubles results are unparalleled.”

Also, Molik commended the Miami Open 2019 champion, Ashleigh Barty. “She (Barty) is one of the world’s best Fed Cup players with her versatility in singles and doubles, and a great leader and asset to the team”, Molik added.
