The Delhi Capitals took victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad, thereby eliminating them from the competition. Delhi were out of place, as they are the only non championship-winning team. However, they proved that they were not going to be intimidated, especially in this DC vs SRH game.

The match with the Sunrisers was closely fought, but DC ultimately prevailed. However, there were a few major talking points during the match.

Ahead of the match, the pitch was a major unknown, as no IPL team had played on the surface. Needless to say, both captains were fully aware that they were going in blind. Initially, it looked like Delhi’s game to lose as they didn’t have to bat first and they didn’t have to test the waters.

Powerplay was hugely important in this DC vs SRH game, and Martin Guptill led from the front for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. By the time six overs were up, the Sunrisers had smashed 54 runs, only losing one wicket in the process. Of those, 35 came off the willow of Guptill in 17 deliveries.

But then after the Powerplay, Delhi unleashed their secret weapon, legspinner Amit Mishra. During his four over stint in the middle, he slowly down the faucet of runs by the SRH batsmen. Not only did the Sunrisers batsmen fail to find the boundary, Guptill was his victim.

The controversial run out

The run-out of Deepak Hooda turned the tide of the DC vs SRH match and it was a controversial affair. Keemo Paul bowled outside off and Hooda failed to connect. Immediately, the umpire signalled a wide but non-striker Rashid Khan, called for a bye. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant tossed the ball back to the bowler, but Paul missed the catch and it crashed onto the stumps.

Back with the batsmen, Hooda took a tumble after colliding with Paul. The latter has gone to collect the throw. DC captain Shreyas Iyer conferred with the umpires ans was asked if he wanted to withdraw the appeal. Initially, he seemed to agree, but Pant convinced him to uphold it, in the end, to SRH’s dismay, Hooda was given his marching orders.

Shaw blazes before SRH take control

When it was the Delhi Capitals’ turn to bat, they too exploited the new ball. Prithvi Shaw took off like a bullet and stormed to a 39 off 24 balls in the Powerplay. By the time the six overs were up, the Delhi Capitals had notched up 55 runs for no loss.  Shaw went on to rack up 56 runs and Delhi were firmly in the driving seat.

But then, a new twist to the tale was added when Khaleel Ahmed and Rashid Khan began to wreak havoc. Khaleel was introduced in the 11th over and scalped DC skipper Shreyas Iyer and later, danger man, Shaw. Then Khan stepped into the fray and left them reeling at 111/5 after 15 overs.

Mishra given out obstructing the field

Owing to the Sunrisers lethal bowling attack, Delhi dragged out the DC vs SRH game into the final over. Five were needed from six deliveries with three wickets in hand. Khaleel was given the honour of closing out the match, but gave away two runs, from 3 balls, including a wide.

In the next delivery, striker Mishra failed to connect but bolted anyway. Meanwhile, Wriddhiman Saha aimed a throw for the stumps at the striker’s end. However, he missed and Khaleel took over and flung it at the non-striker’s end. The ball went and struck Mishra’s arm and Ahmed promptly appealed. Poor Amit Mishra was dismissed for obstructing the field and “deliberately put himself in between the throw and the stump”.

All-in-all, it was an entertaining game and in the end, it was the Delhi Capitals who walked away with the spoils of glory.
