IPL 2020: Pravin Tambe Not Eligible to Play in the Indian Premier League

Veteran spinner Pravin Tambe is not eligible to play in the IPL 2020, according to BCCI rules. As per the rules, no player can play in a foreign league (The T10 league in Dubai and Sharjah) without officially announcing his retirement. He also tried to disobey BCCI policies, by featuring in a foreign league.

The new Indian Premier League chairman Brijesh Patel has confirmed the news to Cricbuzz.

Pravin Tambe, 48, became the oldest player in the IPL. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bought him for a base price of INR 20 Lakh in the IPL 2020 auction ahead of the season this year. Tambe has already played in the tournament, having a total of 33 appearances in four seasons (from 2013 to 2016).

He has played for three different franchises – Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Lions and Sunrisers Hyderabad. There he has taken 28 wickets. 15 out of 28 came for Rajasthan Royals which he picked up in the 2014 season.

Veteran India spinner Harbhajan Singh, who hasn’t played for India since 2016 but hasn’t announced his retirement, was the only Indian player in the draft for The Hundred. The Hundred is a new format league in England which will take place next year.

However, ahead of the draft, Harbhajan took his name off the list of continuing to play for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Another India player, Yuvraj Singh also took part in the Canada Global T20 League after announcing his retirement from all forms of the game.

On the other hand, KKR has not named any replacement player yet. Ahead of IPL 2020, KKR have faced another issue as well. Players from the franchise have come under the scanner for age fudging. Middle-order batsman Nitish Rana and fast bowler Shivam Mavi are the two players and they might not get their services in the upcoming season.

BCCI banned 22 players in 2015 for age fudging, including Nitish Rana. Since then, the all-rounder is not eligible to play age-group cricket anymore. Although the decision is yet to be taken on his future. On the other hand, Shivam Mavi’s case has gone to the BCCI.
