The year 2020 has been full of surprises, even in the games industry. Games like ‘The Last of Us 2’, ‘Ghost of Tsushima’, etc did well, but that was quite expected. What fans didn’t expect was for games like ‘Fall Guys’ and ‘Among Us’ to be the breakout games of the year. Both these games have managed to impress the fans, even though they are absolutely simplistic. Although, since its launch in August, Fall Guys has now lost its charm, and Among Us may be the reason behind it.

The meteoric rise of Fall Guys started with its launch in August. The game was announced at E3 2019, but since then there was hardly any anticipation for the same. All of this changed when the game finally came out on PC and PlayStation 4.

Fall Guys completely changed the way people perceived battle royale games. Unlike other games where you need to kill other players to win, this game was completely different. Much like the show ‘Takeshi’s Castle’ and ‘Wipeout’, players had to go through a series of obstacles. Each match is divided over a few levels where players have to qualify for the next one. In the final level, the last one standing wins.

The game is absolutely simple in terms of gameplay and rather fun. A major chunk of credit for its popularity also goes to the streamers. The social media team for Fall Guys is also amazing, which further helped the game rise to the top.

The game did have server and hacker issues, but the developers quickly solved these. Although, it wasn’t long before the game’s downfall began. Shortly after its August release, the viewership of the game started going down by mid-September. Even the Season 2 update couldn’t bring the numbers back for the game.

One of the biggest reasons behind this was that the game’s re-playability is not so good. After a point, the game feels monotonous as the players have to go through the same levels over and over again. Additionally, there was no particular skill required for the game, which makes it a little less interesting. And lastly, when the viewership and player count for Fall Guys was ‘falling’, Among Us stepped in and delivered the final blow.

Fall Guys lost the crown to Among Us

Among Us shot to fame thanks to the streaming community. A few streamers found this game from 2018, which has cross-play on PC and mobile. The game consists of impostors and crewmates, where the objectives are simple. The Crewmates have to finish tasks as quickly as possible to win and avoid getting killed by Impostors. The Impostors have to kill the crewmates and avoid being caught by them. It also has a voting system where players can vote out whoever they suspect.

This may seem like an easy game, but it requires a relatively great skill level.

One of the similarities it has to Fall Guys is that both the games are not dependent on great graphics. Additionally, both these titles are also relatively cheap compared to other games. Yet, Among Us is still growing in popularity and has taken the crown from Fall Guys. The popularity of Among Us is so great that even Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez streamed this game on Twitch to raise awareness about voting.

The timing of discovery for Among Us was unfortunate for Fall Guys. But the games are fun and can be played with friends as well. Although, Fall Guys could’ve probably still been at the top if it weren’t for Among Us.
