Is Lewis Hamilton to Formula E a Possibility? Toto Wolff Answers

Lewis Hamilton is regarded as one of the best F1 drivers of this generation. Recently, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff revealed that the British driver is open to moving to another series in the future.

A few days ago, Mercedes officially joined the all-electric Formula E series with their own team. In light of that, Wolff revealed that the five-time Formula 1 world champion is eyeing a move there the future.

”Lewis follows a lot of motorsports and we have certainly already talked about Formula E. When we were both unable to sleep in Shanghai, it came on TV and we sat together watching. We exchanged some ideas there then,” Wolff said to Sky Sports.

“Lewis is a versatile driver who really has an eye for that sport. If the popularity for Formula E will increase, then he really is someone who is open to it. But now his focus is still on Formula 1.”

For the upcoming Formula E campaign, Mercedes will be fielding F2 driver Nyck de Vries and former McLaren driver Stoffel Vandoorne. It is said that the Formula E team will share a close relationship with its Formula 1 counterpart.

“It would be crazy not to use some of the experience we’ve built up over the years as we start on this adventure so obviously we’re working with Mercedes AMG High-Performance Powertrains,” Mercedes Formula E boss Ian James admitted to The Express.

“We’re also able to tap into the F1 team in certain other aspects as well. It’s taking those ingredients that we’ve got and bringing them all together in hopefully the right recipe.”

As Formula E enters its sixth season it continues to grow as a sport and is attracting numerous manufacturers. Aside from Mercedes, even Porsche has jumped on the bandwagon, fielding Neel Jani and Andre Lotterer.

Mercedes and Porsche are two of several manufacturers in Formula E, the list includes Audi, Venturi, Nissan, DS Automobiles, BMW, Jaguar, Mahindra and NIO.
